Our Approach
There is a need for determining gut microbiome at low cost in less time without any sample loss to detect early onset of a disease and/or develop a personalized probiotic-based solution. The plan is to provide a system and method for determining microbiome from host metabolome (blood metabolites), with a simple finger prick, by using a machine learning model
STEP 1 - Building a comparative database
Blood samples from individuals were collected on a dry blood spot (DBS) card. The collected DBS card was then shipped to the lab for analysis. Blood samples were used to generate the list of metabolites (collectively called metabolome) from each individual.Similarly we also collected fecal materials from same individuals aseptically. The fecal material was then tested using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methodology to generate the list of microbial genus level information (metagenome).
STEP 2 - Building AI model & training it on the datasets
The metabolome and metagenome information were then compared and analyzed further. An AI model was developed to predict metagenome from metabolome data of a sample from an unknown or new individual.For this purpose, we trained blood metabolite data of individuals from various cohorts with their fecal microbiome profile. The training set is then tested and only those results were that had more than 90% accuracy and above 95% confidence level.
STEP 3 - Gut Function Health Test
Armed with a list of metabolites which, when found in an individual, can predict the microbes present or absent in the individual - we started finalising the test in detail, and started building our report as well. In addition, the results also provide information about other vital nutrients to predict health status of an individual.
Step 4 - Personal Probiotics
Knowing which beneficial bacteria are present/absent in you allowed us to manufacture probiotics customised for an individual.
